The rebound is real; the reversal is not: payrolls will test $4,132–4,233
The REGION INVESTS/Twelve Data operational feed showed XAU/USD at $4,186.65/oz at about 06:00 UTC. Reuters recorded spot at $4,184.45 at 04:19 GMT. The $2.20 difference reflects separate sources and timestamps. At publication time, the official September Employment Situation had not been released; it was scheduled for 12:30 GMT / 08:30 ET.
Gold is down more than 2% for the week and heading for a second consecutive weekly decline; DXY is around 102.09 and the US 10Y reached 5.3445%, its highest since 2002.
H4 improved: the $4,183.21 close was above SMA20 at $4,163.60, RSI was 50.24 and the MACD histogram +6.32. Yet the D1 close at $4,177.45 remains below SMA20/50/200 and MACD is negative.
Not the payroll headline alone, but jobs, unemployment, wages and the 2Y/10Y plus DXY reaction. A macro confirmation is needed for a break of $4,132 or $4,233.

October hike odds collapsed, but long real rates remain restrictive
On 16 September the Fed unanimously raised the target range by 25bp to 3.75–4.00%. The next meeting is 27–28 October.
The end-2026 median policy rate is 4.1%, consistent with one more 25bp move from the current midpoint.
The probability of an October increase is about 25–28%, down from roughly 70% earlier in the week; a December increase is still priced at about 82%.
| Measure | Official snapshot | Fresh market | Meaning for gold |
|---|---|---|---|
| US 2Y | 4.88% · FRED 30 Sep | 4.8039% on 2 Oct morning | The front end softened after PCE and dovish remarks. |
| US 10Y nominal | 5.29% · FRED 30 Sep | 5.3445% high; 5.26% on 2 Oct morning | The opportunity cost remains a direct constraint. |
| US 10Y real | 2.93% · FRED 30 Sep | +10bp since 25 Sep | The main negative channel for a non-yielding asset. |
| 10Y breakeven | 2.36% · 1 Oct | +2bp since 25 Sep | The nominal yield rise is mainly real yield/term premium, not breakeven. |
DXY still confirms gold's weekly weakness
DXY around 102.09, its highest since April 2025; approximately +1.1% for the week and a third consecutive weekly gain.
Gold is down more than 2% while DXY and real yields rise. This is not a divergence; it is full macro confirmation of the correction.
DXY below 101.5 with the 10Y below 5.20% would confirm gold above $4,233. DXY above 102.2 and 10Y above 5.34% increase the risk of losing $4,132.
Inflation was softer, but jobs and spending do not give the Fed a clean signal
August headline +0.3% m/m and +3.4% y/y; core +0.2% m/m and +3.0% y/y. Monthly inflation was softer than consensus.
Nominal spending +0.9%, real spending +0.6%; saving rate 4.1%. Q2 GDP was revised to +2.2% annualised.
JOLTS 7.079m; ADP +90k; weekly claims 197k. Labour demand is softer, but layoffs remain low.
| Date · ET | Release | Verified / consensus | What can change gold's path |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 Oct · 08:30 | September Employment Situation | Not released at cut-off; Reuters consensus +90k payrolls, 4.1% unemployment | >150k and wages ≥0.3% m/m is hawkish; <50k and unemployment >4.1% is dovish. Revisions and wages matter as much as the headline. |
| 14 Oct · 08:30 | September CPI | Future release | Core ≥0.3% m/m with expensive oil restores December hike risk; ≤0.2% weakens it. |
| 27–28 Oct | FOMC | Target range currently 3.75–4.00% | The market will assess the decision and the Fed's reaction to jobs, oil and inflation expectations. |
Gulf risk supports the premium, but oil simultaneously makes rates heavier
Iran is preparing a broader response if US attacks resume; Washington is moving additional forces and a carrier group to the region.
Brent around $102.28, WTI $92.68. China suspended refined-product exports, adding to supply uncertainty.
Despite tension and Brent above $100, gold is down more than 2% for the week. The USD/real-yield channel currently outweighs haven demand.
Structural demand remains; the latest weekly marginal flow is weak
Global outflow −1.6t; holdings around 4,249t.
+$18bn and +121t; month-end holdings at a record 4,189t and AUM of $615bn.

WGC reported net +23t; China +20t, Poland +8t, Russia −6t.
China's holiday reduces price discovery; India and Dubai require live landed-cost quotes
| Market | Verified data | Conclusion | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| China · current market | Mainland markets are closed for the holiday week. The latest reliable pre-holiday snapshot showed a premium near zero and soft demand. | No new executable premium or shortage can be claimed today. | A fresh SGE/dealer quote with timestamp is required after reopening. |
| China · structure | More than 1,100t imported in January–August; ETFs about +44t; official PBoC buying continues. | Long-run official and financial demand is real. | Imports are not final consumption and data arrive with a lag. |
| India | Latest reliable snapshot: roughly $78/oz discount to import parity; August imports of $2.3bn or about 15–20t, −45% m/m and −58% y/y. | Festive and wedding demand offers potential, but the high price constrains volume. | The premium snapshot is older than the live market; a dealer quote is needed. |
| India ETFs | August inflow INR25.97bn; holdings 121.3t. | Financial demand is stronger than immediate jewellery imports. | ETF holdings are not a physical retail premium. |
| UAE / Dubai | No public verifiable daily wholesale premium or refinery-throughput series is available. | Price must be built for the exact parcel and counterparty. | Assay, origin, refinery slot, freight, insurance, KYC/AML, tax and bank cut-off must be verified. |

Three conditional post-payroll scenarios — a risk map, not trading advice
Base · range holds
- Payrolls 70–110k, unemployment near 4.1%; wages and revisions deliver no shock.
- DXY around 101.5–102.2; 10Y at 5.20–5.35%.
- XAU/USD holds $4,132–4,233; H4 improves while D1 stays corrective.

Gold-positive
- Payrolls <50k, unemployment >4.1% and/or wages ≤0.2% m/m.
- October hike odds fall; DXY <101.5, 10Y <5.20% and real yield eases.
- Price reclaims $4,207/$4,220 and $4,233; then $4,286–4,301 and $4,325.
- Constraint: oil/term premium prevents long yields from falling.
Gold-negative
- Payrolls >150k and wages ≥0.3% m/m or strong positive revisions.
- DXY >102.2; 10Y back above 5.34% and hike odds rise.
- D1 below $4,132, then $4,112; monitor $4,022–4,000.
- Invalidation: a rapid recovery above $4,207–4,233 as real yields fall.
