GENERAL MARKET INTELLIGENCE

What is actually driving gold now.

The Fed and rates, USD, US macro, geopolitics, central banks, ETFs and physical flows. Updated 16 October 2026 at about 05:00 UTC.

Verdict. XAU/USD $4,175.25: week −0.49%, range $4,073.82–4,216.21. H1/H4 recovered, but completed D1 is below SMA20/50/200. Hot CPI/PPI conflict with falling US 10Y and DXY: short-term support exists, but a daily reversal is unconfirmed.
01

The Fed and cost of money

An October pause is likely; a December hike remains the market base case.

Fact

Target 3.75–4.00% after the 16 September hike; next meeting 27–28 October.

Yields

Nominal 10Y near 5.087% on 15 Oct; official real 10Y 2.84% on 14 Oct; breakeven 2.32% on 15 Oct.

Assessment

27–30% October-hike odds and about 89.5% by December. Lower long yields help, but real yield remains high.

02

USD confirms recovery, but not every move

DXY is down for the first week in five; intraday correlation remains imperfect.

Fact

DXY 101.89 on 16 Oct morning, −0.2% for the week; US 10Y had its steepest weekly fall in over a year.

Confirmation

On Thursday gold rose as the dollar and yields fell — the conventional inverse-rate response.

Contradiction

On Friday Reuters spot was −0.4% despite soft USD: profit-taking and timestamps broke the one-day link.

03

US macroeconomy

Inflation is hot, nominal retail is firm, hiring is softer.

CPI / PPI

CPI +0.6% m/m and +3.7% y/y; core +0.3%/+2.6%. PPI +1.3% m/m, +6.3% y/y versus +0.5% consensus.

Retail / jobs

Retail +0.8% m/m, but ex-gas +0.2%; payroll +29k, unemployment 4.2%, wages +3.0% y/y.

What moves gold

The combination of core inflation, wages, real consumption and Fed pricing. Import/export prices arrive after cut-off.

04

Geopolitics with a measurable channel

Oil, logistics and inflation expectations—not a list of headlines.

Oil

Brent $105.21, WTI $97.20; +0.44% and +5.81% for the week.

Logistics

Hormuz near 11.62m bpd; HSFO shortfall at least 0.8m t/month from the region.

Gold channel

Safe haven helps; oil inflation can lift yields and partly neutralise demand.

05

Central banks and ETFs

Structural demand is verified by holdings, not price alone.

Central banks

August +39t, 2026 YTD +170t; China +20t in August/+80t YTD, Poland +8t/+98t.

ETFs

September +US$10bn/+67t; record holdings 4,256t. Q3 +US$31bn/+211t.

Assessment

A structural cushion exists, but a new impulse needs D1 above SMA20 with continued holdings growth.

06

Physical market

Chinese investment demand outpaces jewellery; India and Dubai require premium discipline.

China

August ETF +11t to 293t; SGE withdrawals 62t, −22% m/m and −27% y/y; July net imports 118t.

India

August imports US$2.3bn versus US$4.16bn in July; 3% IGST for bank imports from 9 October.

Dubai

2025 gold trade near Dh1tn. Live premium/refinery flow is not published without a bilateral quote.
