The week's primary signal: weak employment was not enough to make gold hold a rally
The REGION INVESTS/Twelve Data operational feed showed $4,116.84/oz at about 05:00 UTC. Reuters recorded spot at $4,128.83 at 04:00 GMT; the difference reflects separate sources and timestamps in a fast market. After unexpectedly weak payrolls, gold reached $4,225.65 on 2 October but closed near $4,141.53. The failure to hold the impulse is information, not noise.
September payrolls rose just 29k, unemployment was 4.2%, wages +0.1% m/m and +3.0% y/y; July–August revisions totalled −60k.
The US 10Y reached 5.3493% early on 6 October, DXY is near an 18-month high and XAU/USD is below its D1 and H4 SMA20/50/200.
Markets see labour cooling as insufficient to offset services inflation, oil risk and term premium. Long-end yields and USD currently dominate short-end dovish repricing.

The Fed became less urgent for October, while the cost of long-duration money kept rising
On 16 September the FOMC unanimously raised the target range by 25bp to 3.75–4.00%. The next meeting is 27–28 October.
After payrolls, the probability of an October move fell to roughly 23%; a December hike is still priced at about 87%.
A weak labour report reduced immediate action risk, but services prices, oil and term premium keep the long end elevated — the channel that matters most to gold.
| Measure | Official snapshot | Fresh market | Meaning for gold |
|---|---|---|---|
| US 2Y nominal | 4.83% · FRED 2 Oct | Eased after jobs | The front end reflects lower odds of an October hike. |
| US 10Y nominal | 5.28% · FRED 2 Oct | 5.3493% early 6 Oct | A 24-year high increases gold's opportunity cost. |
| US 10Y real | 2.92% · FRED weekly EOP 2 Oct | ≈2.99% proxy | 5.3493% minus 2.36% breakeven; an estimate, not an official intraday TIPS quote. |
| 10Y breakeven | 2.36% · FRED 5 Oct | Stable | The nominal 10Y rise is mainly real yield/term premium. |
The dollar confirms, rather than contradicts, gold's weakness
DXY holds around 102.2 and reached an 18-month high; the euro traded near 1.12.
Weak payrolls did not weaken the dollar for long: higher long yields outweighed labour cooling. Gold's decline is therefore macro-confirmed.
DXY below 101.5 with the US 10Y below 5.20% supports a break of $4,190–4,202. DXY above 102.3 and the 10Y above 5.35% increase risk at $4,099.
Employment is softer, but the inflation backdrop does not give the Fed freedom to turn dovish
Payrolls +29k; unemployment 4.2%; participation 61.8%; wages +0.1% m/m and +3.0% y/y; three-month average +51k.
Headline +0.3% m/m and +3.4% y/y; core +0.2% m/m and +3.0% y/y. Real spending +0.6% m/m.
ISM Services 54.9 versus 55.4; prices paid were the highest in more than four years and backlogs the highest since July 2022.
| Date · ET | Release | Status | What can change gold's path |
|---|---|---|---|
| 6 Oct · 08:30 | US trade balance | Nearest release | A secondary driver; only a large surprise and USD reaction would matter materially. |
| 14 Oct · 08:30 | September CPI | Primary test | Core ≤0.2% m/m would ease yields/USD; ≥0.3% with expensive oil supports December hike risk. |
| 15 Oct · 08:30 | PPI + retail sales | Inflation and demand | Strong prices/demand confirm long-yield pressure; weakness in both provides relief. |
| 16 Oct · 08:30 | Import/export prices | Traded inflation | A test of oil and logistics pass-through into the US price pipeline. |
| 27–28 Oct | FOMC | Next decision | Markets will assess both the rate and the Fed's reaction to jobs, CPI, oil and expectations. |
Routes are functioning better, but the cost of risk remains embedded in oil and freight
Saudi-backed Yemeni forces retook coast near Bab el-Mandeb; tanker attacks around Hormuz keep logistics risk elevated.
Brent about $100.59, WTI $89.73. Gulf flows excluding Iran recovered above 81% of pre-war levels.
The G7 agreed to release 100m barrels of diesel/crude from reserves; Iranian exports remain halted by the US blockade.
Structural demand is real, but it is not a daily price floor

Last publicly verified snapshot: −1.6t. We do not present a newer comparable WGC weekly number as fact.
Reuters/LBMA forecast: about 720t, −15% y/y but still above pre-2022 levels.
PBoC about +20t in August; official and investment demand remain structural channels.
China's holiday limits price discovery; India and Dubai require live landed-cost quotes
| Market | Verified data | Conclusion | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| China | Mainland markets are closed for the holiday week; WGC's local-premium page was updated on 5 October, but no fresh executable dealer quote is publicly verified. | A current premium or shortage cannot be stated reliably until trading resumes. | After reopening, obtain an SGE/dealer quote with timestamp, fineness and lot size. |
| China · structure | PBoC bought about 20t in August; Reuters notes stronger investment demand and bars/coins exceeding jewellery in 2025. | Financial and official demand are real over the long horizon. | This is not a live wholesale premium or a guaranteed floor. |
| India | Latest reliable snapshot: about $78/oz discount; August imports $2.3bn, roughly 15–20t, −45% m/m and −58% y/y. | High prices and a weak rupee constrain volumes despite seasonal demand. | The snapshot is stale for a firm quote; obtain a current dealer/import-parity calculation. |
| UAE / Dubai | No public verifiable daily wholesale-premium or refinery-throughput series is available. | Build price for the exact parcel, origin and counterparty. | Assay, refinery slot, freight, insurance, tax, finance, KYC/AML and bank cut-off are mandatory. |

Three conditional scenarios — a risk map, not trading advice
Base · $4,099–4,190
- DXY around 101.8–102.3; US 10Y at 5.20–5.35%.
- An October hike remains unlikely; December remains the market base case.
- XAU/USD holds the $4,099 D1 lower band but H4 fails to hold above $4,190.
- Invalidation: a D1 close outside the range with USD/yield confirmation.
Gold-positive
- US 10Y below 5.20%, DXY below 101.5; December hike expectations ease.
- H4 reclaims $4,158, then $4,190–4,202 and the $4,226 payroll high.
- D1 above $4,273 confirms the higher-timeframe reversal.
- Catalyst: softer CPI/core ≤0.2% m/m and lower real yields.
Gold-negative
- US 10Y above 5.35%, DXY above 102.3; services/inflation stay hot.
- D1 closes below $4,099; next area $4,022–4,000.
- Oil/freight keep term premium high despite weak labour.
- Invalidation: a rapid recovery above $4,190–4,226 as real yields fall.
