Buyers regained short-term control; the higher-timeframe filter remains negative
A pause in DXY, a second day of lower US 10Y yields, cheaper oil, record ETF holdings and reported central-bank buying.
Real 10Y near 2.9%, another Fed hike still priced by December, DXY near 18-month highs and a weak D1 structure.
Acceptance above $4,207 and D1 SMA20 $4,240, or a return below $4,132 and H4 support $4,091. CPI on 14 October is the next major macro test.
The week shifted from a downside break into a V-shaped recovery

An October pause is likely, but a December hike remains the market base case
On 16 September the FOMC unanimously raised the target range by 25bp to 3.75–4.00%. The next meeting is 27–28 October.
The decision was unanimous but the rationale was split: insurance against supply shocks versus restraining demand-driven inflation. Most participants expected another hike by year-end.
Roughly 17% probability of an October hike and 83% in December. Market pricing is not a Fed commitment.
| Measure | Latest comparable snapshot | Implication for gold |
|---|---|---|
| US 2Y nominal | 4.768% · Reuters 7 Oct | The front end reflects a shift toward December, not the end of the tightening cycle. |
| US 10Y nominal | 5.28% · FRED 7 Oct; near 5.29% intraday 9 Oct | High opportunity cost remains the main constraint on non-yielding gold. |
| US 10Y real | 2.92% · FRED 7 Oct | A real rate around 3% explains why D1 did not reverse after weak payrolls. |
| 10Y breakeven | 2.35% · FRED 8 Oct | Nominal 5.28% minus 2.35% gives a ≈2.93% proxy; long-end pressure is mainly real/term premium. |
Friday's feedback loop is conventional: softer USD, firmer gold
DXY is near 102.03 and marginally lower on the session after reaching an 18-month high. This is a pause, not a confirmed dollar reversal.
Gold is rising as USD and yields ease: a classic inverse-rate response, not durable decoupling.
DXY below 101.5 with US 10Y below 5.20% supports $4,240/$4,332; DXY above 102.3 with 10Y above 5.35% raises risk at $4,132/$4,091.
Weak hiring coexists with low layoffs and above-target inflation
Payrolls +29k; unemployment 4.2%; participation 61.8%; wages +0.1% m/m and +3.0% y/y; July–August revisions −60k.
Initial claims 197k, a fourth week below 200k; continuing claims 1.716m. The regime remains low-hire/low-fire.
CPI +0.4% m/m and +3.4% y/y; core +0.3% m/m and +2.4% y/y. PCE +0.3% m/m and +3.4% y/y; core PCE +0.2% and +3.0%.
| Date · ET | Release | What can materially change gold |
|---|---|---|
| 14 Oct · 08:30 | September CPI + real earnings | Core ≤0.2% m/m with softer shelter/services lowers yields/USD; core ≥0.4% raises December-hike risk. A 0.3% reading depends on composition. |
| 15 Oct · 08:30 | September PPI + retail sales | Strong prices and control-group sales together lift real yields; weakness in both offers cleaner relief. |
| 16 Oct · 08:30 | Import/export prices | Tests oil, FX and freight transmission into the US price pipeline. |
| 27–28 Oct | FOMC | Rate decision, risk balance and language on December; the current October-hike probability is only 17%. |
| 29 Oct · 08:30 | September PCE | The Fed's next preferred inflation gauge, after October CPI. |
Immediate-risk relief lowered oil, but the logistics premium remains
Brent $102.91 and WTI $90.40 around 04:50 GMT, down about 1.2–1.3%, after the US president ruled out an attack on Iran before the 3 November elections and said talks continued.
Before the war, Hormuz handled about 20% of global oil and fuel flows. New US sanctions were imposed, while a storm temporarily removed 1.3m bpd of Gulf of Mexico production.
China is resuming fuel exports and the IEA is accelerating reserve releases. This moderates the near-term energy shock without eliminating freight and insurance premia.
There is genuine structural demand here, not just market noise
+$10bn and +67t; holdings reached a record 4,256t.
A record +$31bn and +211t. September AUM fell 7% to $574bn because of the lower gold price.
September: North America +$4.0bn, Europe +$3.6bn and Asia +$2.3bn.
Reported net buying +39t; YTD +170t. China +20t and Poland +8t.
| Buyer / flow | Verified data | Signal |

| China / PBoC | +20t in August, a 22nd consecutive month; holdings 2,387t, about 9% of reserves. | Consistent diversification rather than a tactical daily flow. |
| Poland | +8t in August, +98t YTD; holdings 648t, target 700t. | One of 2026's strongest official buyers. |
| Turkey / Russia | Turkey +3t in August but −82t YTD; Russia −6t in August and −56t YTD. | Headline purchases must be read against net/YTD context. |
| ETF investors | Holdings increased even while gold fell in September. | A stronger structural signal than a one-off futures squeeze. |
Investment demand is strong, jewellery demand uneven; there is no single “global premium”
| Market | Verified data | Premium / discount | Operational implication |
|---|---|---|---|
| China | August: gold ETFs +11t to 293t; SGE withdrawals 62t, −22% m/m and −27% y/y; July net imports 118t; PBoC +20.2t. | No fresh timestamped executable premium after Golden Week is publicly verified. | ETF/official/import channels are strong, while weak SGE withdrawals show softer wholesale/jewellery turnover. |
| India | August imports $2.3bn versus $4.16bn in July; 15% import duty. On 9 October, a 3% IGST on bank imports without the former benefit was confirmed. | No verifiable current dealer quote for 9 October. The last public Reuters snapshot we found, 24 July, showed a discount up to $56/oz; it is not a current price. | A live domestic-price versus landed-import-parity calculation must include duty, GST, INR, lot size and settlement. |
| UAE / Dubai | Dubai reported 2025 foreign gold trade near Dh1tn (+60% y/y), roughly 2,750t of physical flow and 13–15% of global gold trade passing through the hub. | No reliable public daily series for wholesale premium or refinery throughput. | A firm parcel quote needs purity, assay, origin, refinery slot, freight, insurance, finance, tax and KYC/AML. |

Three conditional scenarios — a monitoring map, not a trade instruction
Base · consolidation $4,132–4,240
- DXY around 101.8–102.3; US 10Y at 5.20–5.35%.
- H1 momentum cools while H4 holds $4,151–4,137.
- Attempts above $4,207 meet D1 SMA20 near $4,240 ahead of CPI.
- Invalidation: D1 close below $4,132 or decisively above $4,240.
Gold-positive
- DXY below 101.5, US 10Y below 5.20%, real yields falling.
- Price accepts above $4,207 and D1 SMA20 $4,240.
- Next map: $4,331–4,332, then D1 upper band $4,420.
- Catalyst: soft CPI/core ≤0.2% m/m or another strong ETF inflow.
Gold-negative
- Friday's squeeze fails under $4,207–4,240.
- DXY above 102.3 and US 10Y above 5.35% return gold below $4,132.
- Monitoring levels: $4,091, $4,062/$4,059; below those, psychological $4,000.
- Catalyst: hot core CPI ≥0.4%, firmer oil and rising real yields.
