The Fed leans toward an October pause, but markets retain a December hike
The FOMC unanimously raised the target range by 25bp to 3.75–4.00%. The next meeting is 27–28 October.
Reuters/CME indicate a 19% October-hike probability and an 85% chance of a hike by December. These are market odds, not a Fed promise.
Waller allows a pause and flexible pace; Hammack prefers moving to restraint relatively quickly. These are participant views, not committee consensus.
| Measure | Snapshot | Gold implication |
|---|---|---|
| US 2Y nominal | 4.789% · 9 Oct close | The front end implies a pause now, not the end of the cycle. |
| US 10Y nominal | 5.243% · 9 Oct close; 5.192% intraday 13 Oct | A 5bp decline supports the bounce, but the level remains high. |
| US 10Y real | 2.92% · FRED 7 Oct | A real rate near 3% is the principal fundamental constraint on non-yielding gold. |
| 10Y breakeven | 2.35% · FRED 8 Oct | Nominal minus breakeven gives a roughly 2.9% real proxy; the long-end move was not only inflation. |
The dollar confirms today's gold move, but remains near an 18-month high
DXY fell 0.2% to 102.39 and the US 10Y yield to 5.192%; Reuters spot gold rose 0.4%.
USD and yields are lower while gold is higher: the conventional inverse-rate relationship works today.
There is no broad dollar reversal: DXY remains near an 18-month high and gold has not cleared $4,216–4,225.
Inflation, not the weak payroll print, will set the next impulse
Payrolls +29k; unemployment 4.2%; wages +0.1% m/m and +3.0% y/y; July–August revisions −60k.
Headline +0.4% m/m and +3.4% y/y; core +0.3% m/m and +2.4% y/y.
Headline +0.3% m/m and +3.4% y/y; core +0.2% m/m and +3.0% y/y; real PCE +0.6%.
| Date · ET | Release | What can materially change gold |
|---|---|---|
| 14 Oct · 08:30 | September CPI + real earnings | Headline below +0.6% with benign core/services lowers yields/USD; a hotter headline and firm core lift October/December hike risk. |
| 14 Oct · 14:00 | Fed Beige Book | Broad price/wage acceleration reinforces restraint; weak demand without price pressure softens it. |
| 15 Oct · 08:30 | September PPI + retail sales | Strong prices and control-group sales together raise real yields; weakness in both creates cleaner relief. |
| 16 Oct · 08:30 | Import/export prices | Tests oil, FX and freight pass-through into the US price pipeline. |
| 27–28 Oct | FOMC | Rate decision, risk balance and December language; current October-hike probability is only 19%. |

Iran is reviewing the US response to a reopening proposal. Before the war, roughly one fifth of global oil and LNG trade passed through the strait.
