Gold retains relative resilience, but the higher-timeframe trend has not recovered
At the operating cut-off Reuters spot XAU/USD was $4,342.41/oz, approximately 0.86% below the week’s opening print in the REGION INVESTS/Twelve Data candle feed ($4,380.05). The latest completed D1 candle, 21 September, closed at $4,343.81; the latest closed H4 bar was $4,343.18. Price remains above the D1 SMA50 but below the SMA20 and SMA200: the market is stabilising after a correction, not yet confirming a durable new upswing.
On 16 September the Fed lifted the target range to 3.75%–4.00%. Nominal US 10-year yield was 4.966% on 21 September; the latest official real 10-year reading was 2.68% for 18 September. DXY was near 100.39 early on 22 September.
D1: close below SMA20 ($4,406) but above SMA50 ($4,296); RSI 51.2 and a negative MACD histogram. H4: RSI 50.4 and price between SMA20 and SMA50, leaving momentum close to neutral.
August ETF additions (+121t) and PBoC purchases (+20.2t) are measurable demand. At the same time, China and India show softer or uneven physical absorption at high prices.

The dollar only partly contradicts gold: pressure is visible, capitulation is not
DXY was near 100.39 early on 22 September. It gained more than 1% in the prior week and reached a more-than-two-month high on Friday.
A firmer dollar typically makes gold more expensive for non-dollar buyers and, together with high yields, weighs on XAU/USD.
Despite DXY above 100 and real 10Y near 2.7%, gold still holds the $4,300 area. That points to offsetting demand without cancelling the currency headwind.

| Date and time ET | Release | Gold channel | What can materially change the picture |
|---|---|---|---|
| 24 Sep · 08:30 | US International Transactions, Q2 | Dollar, external financing and Treasury demand. | A large capital-flow deviation capable of moving USD and yields. |
| 29 Sep · 10:00 | August JOLTS | Labour demand → Fed path. | Not a one-decimal miss, but a clear change in vacancies and separations versus the current resilient labour picture. |

Only events already affecting oil, routes or haven demand are included
Brent remains above $100. This raises the risk of second-round effects on transport, insurance, refinery costs and inflation expectations.
Houthi advances in Yemen sustain supply-security and route risk, although markets are not pricing a complete interruption of flows.
Expectations of possible US-Iran dialogue at the UN General Assembly cap the oil premium. Lower oil reduces the inflation channel, but can also reduce haven demand.

Investment demand is firmer than jewellery demand; regional premiums diverge
| Market | Confirmed data | What it means | Data limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| China | ETFs +11t in August to 293t; SGE withdrawals 62t, −22% m/m and −27% y/y; July net imports 118t. | Financial investment demand is resilient, while wholesale and jewellery absorption is softer. | Premiums move daily; monthly withdrawals are not identical to end demand. |
| India | Discount near $78/oz to import parity on 11 Sep; August imports $2.3bn, estimated 15–20t, −45% m/m and −58% y/y. | Local supply exceeded immediate demand; high prices restrained discretionary jewellery, while wedding demand was more resilient. | The series includes WGC estimates; unofficial supply is not fully measured. |
| India ETFs | August inflows +67% m/m to INR25.97bn; holdings +1.6t to 121.3t. | Investment demand can coexist with weak imports and jewellery demand. | ETF flows do not substitute for bar, coin or jewellery demand. |
